Vocalist Rebecca Griffin brings a rich, sultry sound to original arrangements of standards and pop tunes as well as lesser-known gems from the jazz songbook. Rebecca offers musicianship and creativity in arranging and interpretation, delivering a unique jazz vocal sound.
Rebecca grew up in the small town of Springvale, Maine, and started her musical career performing in musical theater alongside her sister Rachel, an up-and-coming singer/songwriter. In high school, Rebecca bought her first Ella Fitzgerald CD and immediately knew she wanted to sing jazz.
In 1998, Rebecca enrolled in the University of New Hampshire’s Music Performance degree program. She studied classical voice, piano, theory and history, and pursued her interest in jazz through the university’s jazz choir and working with the many talented jazz students. Upon graduating summa cum laude with a double major in Music Performance and Italian with minors in Political Science and Race, Culture and Power, Rebecca was drawn to the San Francisco Bay Area’s culture and diversity.
Rebecca began studying at Berkeley’s Jazzschool, as well as studying privately with accomplished vocalists and educators Stephanie Bruce, Clairdee and Laurie Antonioli. In 2006, the 26-year-old vocalist released her debut album “Live at Kelly’s,” recorded during one of her popular live performances at Kelly’s of Alameda.
Searching for new ways to bring her personal touch to jazz music and inspired by the innovative arrangements of artists such as Kurt Elling and Nnenna Freelon, Rebecca studied arranging with Frank Martin at the Jazzschool. Excited and energized by the experience, Rebecca embarked on a new creative approach to her jazz vocal performing.
Drawing from influences as diverse as Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder and Jeff Buckley, Rebecca Griffin continues to entertain audiences with her warm sound and presence and original interpretations. She has performed throughout the Bay Area at venues such as Anna’s Jazz Island, Savanna Jazz, Downtown Restaurant, and Kelly’s of Alameda.
Rebecca continues to learn and grow musically through working with many of the Bay Area’s most talented young musicians and respected teachers. With her mellow style and appealing new twist on a well-known repertoire, Rebecca will continue to build her appeal with audiences for years to come.
